GoDaddy and IONOS compete directly in the UK budget domain registrar market both use deep first-year discounts to attract registrations and make their margin on renewals. Comparing them requires looking at total cost over several years, not just the promotional first-year price.
The promotional pricing reality
Both registrars advertise extremely low first-year prices:
| TLD | GoDaddy year 1 | IONOS year 1 | GoDaddy renewal | IONOS renewal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .co.uk | £0.99–£2.99 | £1.00 | £8.99 | £9.99 |
| .com | £0.99–£4.99 | £1.00 | £17.99 | £14.99 |
| .org | £3.99 | £1.00 | £12.99 | £12.99 |
| .net | £4.99 | £1.00 | £13.99 | £13.99 |
The first-year difference is marginal both offer effective £1 promotions on most TLDs. The renewal price is where the real comparison happens.
5-year total cost (.com):
- GoDaddy: £0.99 + 4 × £17.99 = £72.95
- IONOS: £1.00 + 4 × £14.99 = £60.96
IONOS is £12 cheaper for a single .com domain over 5 years. For a business with 10 domains, that’s £120 over 5 years still not dramatic, but IONOS clearly wins on .com pricing.
For .co.uk, GoDaddy’s renewal is actually slightly cheaper (£8.99 vs £9.99), so IONOS’s advantage is TLD-specific.
WHOIS privacy: both charge, neither is generous
Neither GoDaddy nor IONOS includes free WHOIS privacy:
- GoDaddy: approximately £10/year for privacy
- IONOS: approximately £5/year for privacy
For UK-registered .co.uk domains, GDPR means your personal details are largely protected in WHOIS by default. For .com domains, WHOIS privacy matters more and adds real cost at both registrars.
If WHOIS privacy is important to you, Porkbun and Namecheap both include it free. This adds approximately £5–10/year per domain to the total cost at GoDaddy or IONOS.
Upsell pressure: GoDaddy is more aggressive
GoDaddy is known for its checkout flow which adds multiple upsell steps before completing a domain purchase:
- WHOIS privacy
- Domain protection
- Website builder trial
- Professional email
- SSL certificate
These are presented in ways that make it easy to accidentally add paid services. The checkout requires careful attention to avoid unintended additions.
IONOS has upsells but they are less aggressive and the checkout flow is cleaner. This is a material UX difference for customers who aren’t vigilant about what they’re agreeing to.
When to choose GoDaddy
GoDaddy’s main advantages:
- Brand recognition the most famous registrar globally, so some buyers feel more comfortable
- Larger ecosystem of tools (website builder, email marketing, bookings)
- Established phone support
But brand recognition is not a technical advantage. GoDaddy’s renewal prices are higher than IONOS for .com, and their checkout is more aggressive. For most buyers, IONOS is the better choice of the two.
When to choose neither
Both GoDaddy and IONOS are worse than Porkbun and Cloudflare Registrar on:
- Renewal pricing (both are higher than cost)
- WHOIS privacy (both charge vs free at Porkbun)
- Checkout transparency (less upsell pressure at Porkbun)
If the goal is lowest total cost and simplest management, Porkbun or Cloudflare Registrar outperform both GoDaddy and IONOS on every metric that matters. The only reason to choose GoDaddy or IONOS is if you already have domains there and the switching cost doesn’t justify moving.
